Types Of Gas A Range Rover Velar Takes (Explained)

On this blog, we do a lot of research regarding specific questions about different cars. Today we’ll look at the Range Rover Velar and answer what kind of gas this car requires. We’ve gone through the owners’ manuals of the 2017 – present Velar to find the answer. Here’s a quick answer:

All generations of Range Rover Velar manufactured from 2017 onwards use premium, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91. Gasoline with an octane rating of 87 can be used temporarily when 91 octane is unavailable.

However, that doesn’t tell the whole story. Below we’ll dive into what kind of gas this car takes. We’ll talk about reformulated gasoline, E-85, and gasoline with additives. Should or shouldn’t you use this for the Range Rover Velar? We’ll also talk about the fuel mileage of each generation as well as possible knocking noises and so much more. Read on!

Does The Range Rover Need Premium Gasoline?

One thing to note immediately is the use of premium gasoline in the Range Rover Velar. Many people wonder if it isn’t always better to use more premium gasoline (e.g., 93 – 95 octane) even though 91 octane is recommended.

This is not the case; the reason for this is that the engine of the Velar is designed for 91 octane gasoline. This means it cannot derive any additional benefit from higher octane gasoline. However, it’s completely capable of using this type of gasoline.

If you only have the option between 87 octane of 93 octane it’s best to go for the 93 octane. Yes, 87 octane is compatible, but it may result in engine knock in certain conditions (more on that later).

Everything To Know About Other Types Of Gasoline

Besides knowing the proper octane levels, there are several other things that you should be aware of concerning the gasoline you use in your Velar. These mainly include different kinds of additives used in the fuel.

First of all, it’s essential to know that all generations of the Range Rover Velar can take gasoline with a maximum of 15% ethanol. Using gasoline with a higher percentage of ethanol will result in severe engine damage. Therefore, do not use E-30 or E85 since these contain 30% and 50 – 85% ethanol. Furthermore, the use of methanol is strictly forbidden in the Range Rover Velar.

Another point to be aware of is what kind of gasoline you’re filling up with. Typically, it’s recommended to use reformulated gasoline sold by TOP TIER retailers. Reformulated gasoline is recommended because it burns cleaner than regular gasoline, and it’s, therefore, better for the environment. In some areas of the United States, reformulated gasoline is mandatory, and the Velar is compatible with this.

Furthermore, it’s recommended you use gasoline from TOP TIER retailers. This kind of fuel has all the proper additives already mixed into it. Again, independent research has shown that this type of fuel cleans the internal parts of your engine and fuel system more thoroughly, thereby increasing your engine’s lifespan.

Finally, Range Rover strictly advises against adding additives to your gasoline. Instead, it’s recommended that you use TOP TIER gasoline. Adding aftermarket additives may result in severe engine damage because these additives can contain silicone or micro-metals, which aren’t beneficial to the engine at all.

What If I Hear A Knocking Noise From The Engine After Refilling?

Hearing a knocking noise in a car is a normal occurrence. However, it’s important to listen carefully to the loudness of the knocking noise. A slight knocking noise is normal, especially in instances where the car is achieving peak performance (such as when towing or driving up a hill).

However, a loud knocking noise is a problem, especially if you just refilled the car. In this case, you’re likely using gasoline with a lower than recommended octane level, and the car is not handling this well.

In this instance, the best thing to do is stop the car and call your dealer or garage. It’s very likely the car needs to be drained from its fuel, and the fuel filter will need to be changed. Ignoring the knocking noise will result in severe mechanical damage.

You might even hear a knocking noise after refilling with 87 octane. Even though 87 octane can be used, it’s not ideal. Again, you have to listen to how loud the knocking noise is. A faint knocking noise is expected with 87 octane, primarily if you use this kind of fuel over a more extended period of time. However, if this noise becomes very audible, you must take the necessary precautions.

Does the Range Rover Velar Have Good Gas Mileage?

Furthermore, we feel it’s important to discuss the gas mileage of the Velar. In general, Range Rovers aren’t the most fuel-efficient cars. The Velar also definitely isn’t. Even though the Velar has relatively small engines (2.0, 3.0) and there’s hybrid technology for some of them, it still barely manages a 20 – 23 combined MPG.

As you can see in the table below, the fuel economy is not the most exciting feature of the Velar.

What’s The Gas Tank Size Of A Range Rover Velar?

Range Rover Velar, manufactured in 2018, have a fuel tank capacity of 16.6 gallons (63 liters) for the gasoline versions and 15.85 gallons (60 liters) for the diesel versions.

Range Rover Velar manufactured between 2019 – 2021 have a fuel tank capacity of 21.9 gallons (83 liters) for the gasoline versions, except for the 5.0L engine, which has a capacity of 21.7 gallons (82 liters). Furthermore, the 2.0 diesels have a fuel tank capacity of 15.85 gallons (60 liters)

Range Rover Velar manufactured from 2022 onwards have a fuel tank capacity of 21.7 gallons (82 liters) and a reserve tank of 3.4 gallons (17 liters).

How Much Does It Cost To Fill Up A Range Rover?

Below, we’ll give you a rough overview of what it costs to fill up different kinds of Range Rover Velar with a gasoline engine. This is, of course, subject to the gasoline prices in your area. We’ll calculate this with an average price of $4 per gallon.

  • It costs $66,40 to fill up a Range Rover Velar manufactured in 2018 with a gasoline engine.
  • It costs $87,60 to fill up a 2019 – 2021 Range Rover Velar except for the 5.0L engine, which costs $86,60 to fill up.
  • It costs $100,40 to fill up a Range Rover Velar manufactured from 2022 onwards.
