On this blog, we do extensive research on the specific questions asked by you about particular cars. Today we’ll see at the Jeep Renegade and what type of gas does it require. We did a lot of digging from the owner’s manuals of Jeep Renegade produced since 2015 to find out the answer.
According to the owner’s manual of Jeep Renegade, 87 octane fuel is acceptable for the vehicle, but Jeep recommends 91 octane gasoline for optimum performance and durability of the engine.
This, however, does not clarify the whole story of Jeep Renegade gas requirements. Below, we’ll be discussing the fuel specifications you should be looking for in your vehicle. Furthermore, we’ll be seeing the additives and different types of fuel and whether or not this is recommended for the Renegade. Finally, we’ll talk about the gas mileage, tank size, and much more of Jeep Renegade. So make sure you read it till the end!

Fuel Requirements Based On Engine Type
2020 – Present
2020 -2021 Jeep Renegade both has an engine option of 1.3L Turbo and 2.4L Engine. Both use unleaded “regular” gasoline with an octane rating of 87 Octane as specified by the (R+M)/2 Method and should not contain more than 15% of Ethanol in the fuel.
The 2020 Flex Fuel Renegade model with a 2.4L engine option uses high-quality unleaded “regular” gasoline of 87 octane, and up to 85 percent ethanol (E85) is required in the gas.
The use of a 91 or higher octane “premium” gasoline will allow these engines to operate to optimal performance. But the use of premium gasoline is not recommended, as it will not provide any benefit over regular gasoline in these engines.
2018 – 2019
The 2018- 2019 models of Jeep Renegade come with a standard four-cylinder 2.4-liter engine that generates 180 horsepower and 237nm of torque. And also have a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder that produces 177 horsepower, and 200 pound-feet of torque is available. Both come in an option of Petrol and Diesel engines.
The petrol engines of Jeep Renegade uses unleaded petrol with an Octane rating (RON) of not less than 95, as mentioned in the owner’s manual. It is not recommended to use petrol containing methanol or ethanol E85 as using these mixtures may cause misfiring and driving issues in your vehicle.
On the other hand, the Diesel Engine uses only diesel fuel that meets the European specification EN590. The use of other products or mixtures may cause irreparable damage to the engine and consequently invalidates the warranty due to the damage caused.
2015-2017
Renegade models from 2015 to 2017 come in an option of a 1.4L Turbo Engine and a 2.4L engine, and all models are intended to run on high-quality unleaded “regular” gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or above. To comply with all pollution laws while also delivering outstanding fuel efficiency and performance.
The use of a 91 or higher octane “premium” gasoline will allow these engines to operate to optimal performance. But premium fuel is not advised for these engines since it will not give any benefit above ordinary gasoline.
What Types Of Gasoline Can And Can’t Be Used?
In essence, the use of good gasoline is essential for your car’s engine performance and better mileage. As you may not know that the fuel you are using for your vehicle may be deteriorating your car’s engine over time, it may cost you a lot of money if not addressed early.
Below, we have discussed which type of gasoline can or cannot be used in your Jeep Renegade.
Reformulated Gasoline
Reformulated gasoline is the gasoline that has been designed to burn cleaner and doesn’t adversely affect the environment. The oxygenates in reformulated gasoline are carefully mixed to decrease vehicle emissions and enhance air quality. Properly blended reformulated gasoline will provide improved performance and durability of engine and fuel system components.
Jeep Renegade is compatible with reformulated gasoline, and it is also recommended by Jeep to use this fuel for your car. It will have no detrimental impact on the engine’s performance or durability of your vehicle, but it will help to enhance the air quality in your region.
Gasoline/Oxygenate Blends
In many of the common cases, fuel suppliers blend unleaded gasoline with oxygenates such as ethanol. E-85 is a typical example of this, where 85% of ethanol is mixed with 15% regular gasoline. Cars using this mixture usually have lower miles per gallon but reach higher horsepower and torque numbers.
As mentioned in the owner’s manual of Jeep Renegade, gasoline with an ethanol content of not more than 15 percent is recommended for your car. If you use ethanol with a concentration of more than 15% in your vehicle, the computer may assume you’re using a “low” fuel mixture (too much air and not enough fuel).
As a result, your car usually responds by pumping too much gasoline (to address a problem that doesn’t exist), leading to low gas mileage and performance. That is why Jeep also does not recommend the use of Oxygenate Gasoline or E85 in your car.
CNG and LP Fuel
The models of Jeep Renegade from 2018 and onwards can also run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquid petroleum gas (LPG). However, the modifications that allow the engine to run on CNG or LP may cause damage to the engine, emissions, and fuel system components in the long run.
MMT in Gasoline
Gasoline that contains MMT (Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl) is not at all recommended to be used for your car. MMT is an octane booster that, when burnt as a gasoline additive, produces manganese particles. And these particles are highly harmful to humans and the environment.
MMT containing gasoline has no additional performance advantage over non-MMT containing gasoline. Also, gasoline blended with MMT reduces spark plug life and emissions. MMT is also prohibited in Federal and California reformulated gasoline.
Gasoline with Added Materials
Besides using unleaded gasoline with the proper octane rating, gasoline that contains detergents, corrosion, and stability additives is recommended for your car. Using gasoline with these additives will help improve fuel economy, reduce emissions, and maintain vehicle performance.
But the use of additives (such as fuel injector cleaner, octane boosters such as MMT, intake valve deposit removers, etc.) is not recommended for your vehicle. It can contain active solvents, which will damage your fuel system of Renegade.
What If I Hear A Knocking Sound From The Engine After Refilling?
In most cases, knocking sounds occur when you use low-quality or incorrect-type fuel in your vehicle. According to the Jeep Renegade owner’s manual, hearing a slight knocking sound from the engine is standard and usually resolves itself.
However, if the knocking sound persists or becomes more robust over time, then it is advisable to visit a mechanic. It can badly harm your car’s fuel system and cost you a lot of money if not repaired immediately. Also, if it is not resolved in time, the damage done to the car’s internals will not come under the vehicle’s warranty.
Does The Jeep Renegade Have A Good Gas Mileage?
The most fuel-efficient Renegade, A front-wheel-drive with the turbocharged 1.3L engine (optional), gets a 24 mileage in the city and 32 mpg on the highway by the EPA’s methodology. And with an all-wheel-drive option, figures fall to 23 and 29 mpg, respectively.
