We’ve written extensively about the Buick Envision and its capabilities on this blog. Today we’re going to look at where the Buick is made. This seems to be a straightforward question, but this car consists of many components (engine, transmission, tires, etc.) made in different parts of the world. Let’s start with a quick answer:
Buick Envision manufactured before 2020 were assembled in Yantai, Shandong in China. The second generation is assembled in Jinqiao, Shanghai. The engines that are used in the Envision either come from Shanghai or Spring Hill, Tennessee. The transmissions in the first generation are made in Mexico, Belgium or Toledo, Ohio. The 9-speed used in the second geneartion is manufactured in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
However, that certainly doesn’t answer the question entirely. Below, we’ll first dive into detail about the assembly location. After, that we’ll give you the complete rundown of where the engines are made, and we’ll do the same for all transmissions used in this vehicle. Finally, we’ll talk about how to identify which tires you have and where they are manufactured precisely. Read on!

Assembly Location Per Generation
The first generation of the Buick Envision, manufactured between 2014 – 2020, was assembled by SAIC-GMC in Yantai, Shandong. The second generation of the Buick envision, manufactured from 2020 onwards, is also assembled by SAIC-GMC but in Jinqiao, Shanghai.

The reason why this car is assembled by SAIC-GMC and not GMC is because SAIC holds the rights to sell Chevrolets, Buicks, GMCs, and Cadillacs in mainland China. Since the Envision is both sold in the United States and China, production, therefore, takes place in China (since this is cheaper) and cars meant for the USA are then shipped to North America.
Engines
Besides assembly, it’s also important to know where the engines for the Envision are made. Besides, the assembly can take place in one place and important parts (such as the engine and transmission) can be shipped from a completely different location. The Envision has used the following engines in the first generation which come from the following places:
- The 1.5 L LFV turbo I4 is manufactured by GM all over the world, however, in this case the engine was only used for the Chinese market which makes the production plant in Shanghai, China, the most likely candidate.
- The 2.0 L LTG turbo I4 and 2.5 L LCV I4 are manufactured by GM in different locations such as Spring Hill, Tennessee while the engine block and cylinder heads are cast at Saginaw Metal Casting Operations in Saginaw, Michigan.

The second-generation only has one engine type which is the 2.0 L LSY turbo I4. This engine, just like the 2.0L LTG and 2.5L LCV, is made in Spring Hill, Tennessee with the engine block and cylinder head being cast in Saginaw, Michigan.
Transmissions
- 7-speed TR-9007 Dual Clutch transmission made in Pedro Escobedo and Santiago de Querétaro, in Mexico, and Zedelgem (Bruges area) in Belgium.
- 6-speed Dual Start/Stop automatic is most likely made in Toledo, Ohio although there are no official reports on this.
- 9-speed Hydra-Matic automatic is made in GM’s San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico.

Tires
Unfortunately, Buick has no information available about what brand of tires come stock on the Envision. Therefore, it’s impossible to give information about this. However, there is a way to figure this out yourself.
Suppose you want to know exactly where the tires of your Buick Envision are made, then you can look up the DOT code on the side of your tires. This code is not that large, so you’ll have to take a moment to find it. It’s an extended code of letters and numbers that starts with the letters ‘DOT’. DOT stands for Department Of Transportation.
After the DOT letters, you’ll find a combination of three letters, numbers, or a mix. You can search on the internet for the specific three number/letter combination you have to find the exact manufacturer and location where the tires are made. For example, ‘1M3’. In this case, 1M3 indicates Michelin makes the tire in Greenville, South Carolina.
Is The Buick Envision American-Made
The Buick Envision is not American made because assembly for the second generation happens in Jinqiao, Shanghai. Furthermore, the 9-speed Hydra-Matic transmission is made in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. However, the engines for this generation are manufactured in Spring Hill, Tennessee which is the only American made part about this car.
