Does The Genesis GV80 Need Premium Gasoline?
First, it’s essential to establish what kind of gasoline is genuinely best for the GV80. Since the GV80 is a luxury SUV, Genesis recommends using premium gasoline with an octane rating of 91. This is relatively common for engines placed in luxury cars because they’re more aimed at achieving performance (which is when higher octane gasoline is helpful).
On the other hand, the GV80 can also take 87 octane temporarily when higher octane gasoline is not available. This is not to say that Genesis recommends this gasoline; it’s just an option in situations in which premium is not available.
To clarify this, if you ever run into a situation where 93 – 95 octane is available but 91 is not, we recommend you opt for the 93 – 95 octane. This is because higher octane gasoline is always going to be less harmful to an engine than lower octane.
However, we don’t recommend you opt for 93 – 95 octane by default (when 91 octane is available) because the engines of the GV80 (both the 2.5 and 3.5) aren’t capable of deriving any more benefit from the 93 – 95 octane than they would from the 91 octane.
What Types Of Gasoline Can And Can’t Be Used?
Besides knowing the proper octane levels, there are several other things that you should be aware of concerning the gasoline you use in your GV80. These mainly include different kinds of additives used in the fuel.
Reformulated Gasoline
First, there’s the use of reformulated gasoline compared to non-reformulated gasoline. Reformulated gasoline is gasoline that’s become popular over the past decade because it burns cleaner than its counterpart. For this reason, it has even become mandatory in some areas of the United States.
Therefore, it’s good to know that Genesis recommends reformulated gasoline. Its use won’t negatively affect the engine or decrease its performance. Overall, it’s just a better type of gasoline that should be used whenever available.
Gasoline/Oxygenated Blends Or E-85
Another important aspect we need to discuss is the use of oxygenated blends of gasoline. Oxygenated blends contain chemicals such as ethanol, methanol, or MTBE that aren’t typically found in large quantities in gasoline. However, some types of gasoline may have these chemicals added.
One of the main reasons to add oxygenates to gasoline is because they tend to burn cleaner because they’re made out of biomass. The most common example of this is ethanol, widely used throughout the United States.
Therefore, it’s good to know that the second generation of the Genesis GV80 can take gasoline with a maximum of 15% ethanol, also referred to as E15. This also means that it can take the other popular ethanol blend, E10. On the other hand, it can’t take E30 (30%), and E85 (51-83%). Doing so will result in damaging the engine and the fuel system.
Other possible oxygenates include methanol. As a general rule of thumb, we advise you to avoid methanol since it’s a very corrosive substance. Genesis GV80 aren’t compatible with gasoline that has been mixed with methanol in any way or form.
Gasoline With Added Materials
Finally, we have to talk about additives in these types of gasoline. As a general rule of thumb, just using any additive marketed to you is a bad idea. This is because many aftermarket additives contain harmful elements to the fuel system and engine.
These elements are most likely going to be some form of silicon or micro metals. Even though many additives are supposed to clean your engine, many will harm your engine. Also, octane boosters are advised against since it’s better to immediately tank the proper octane levels.

In the case of the GV80, this could mean filling the car up with 87 – 89 octane. Even though Genesis states this type of gasoline can be used, you’re never sure until you try it with your vehicle.
In the instance in which you do hear a loud knocking noise, the best thing to do is stop the car and call your dealer or garage. It’s very likely the car needs to be drained from its fuel, and the fuel filter will need to be changed. Ignoring the knocking noise will result in severe mechanical damage.
Does the Genesis GV80 Have Good Gas Mileage?
Furthermore, it’s important to know more about the gas mileage a GV80 gets. As can be expected, this large luxury SUV is not particularly developed for its phenomenal fuel economy. As can be seen in the table below, the 2.5 L engine gets a combined MPG of 22, whereas the larger 3.5 L engine is stuck at the 20-mark.
