Nissan Rogue typically are reliable cars. However, they did have their fair share of problems throughout the years and today, we´ll look specifically at the numerous door lock problems. Here is a quick summary:
Nissan Rogue have had door lock problems caused by malfunctioning Intelligent Keys or faulty door latches. Synchronizing the Intelligent Key, replacing the battery of the Intelligent Key, or replacing the door lock assembly have been effective solutions depending on the problem.
However, that certainly doesn´t tell us everything about the door lock problems on a Nissan Rogue. Below, we´ll give you a detailed look at the potential issues, what caused them and how you can fix them. Read on!
1. Rear Door Lock Malfunctions
Nissan recalled a small sample of Rogue in July 2015 because of a malfunctioning rear door lock assembly. Due to a manufacturing fault, the rear door lock assemblies wouldn´t fully latch. This meant the doors could fly open while driving.
The recall involved checking the codes on the lock assemblies and, if they fell within the suspected range, completely replacing the door lock assemblies altogether.
2. Key Doesn´t Work, But Manual Switches Do
In February 2019, Nissan issued a service bulletin for the 2016 – 2019 Rogue and the 2017 – 2019 Rogue Hybrid and Rogue Sport. In this case, the Intelligent Key doesn´t have any functioning key; however, the manual switches do still work. According to Nissan:
Intelligent Key de-synchronization may occur if the Intelligent Key is not used for an extended period of time, or if the Intelligent Key was not operating due to low battery condition and the battery has been replaced.
To test if the Intelligent Key is synchronized, try to start the car with the Intelligent Key in the car. If successful, everything should be fine. If not, this document contains a detailed procedure to synchronize the Intelligent Key with the vehicle.
Do not replace anything (not even the battery of the Intelligent Key or the Intelligent Key itself) before having thoroughly checked the synchronization of the key with the vehicle.
3. Doors Won´t Open With Intelligent Key
Between 2007 – 2012 and 2014, Nissan struggled with the functioning of the Intelligent Key and the door locks. The most reported complaint was that the key fob wouldn´t open and/or close the door locks.
Nissan first issued a recall for this in February 2012, which concerned all 2007 – 2012 Rogues with an Intelligent Key. This problem was either caused by low voltage of the battery key fob, a faulty Intelligent Key, or a weak signal from the outside door handle antenna. Technicians identified the problem and replaced the necessary part free of charge.
In 2014 these problems returned, and Nissan issued another recall. However, this time problems with the battery almost exclusively caused the door lock problems. Specifically, the battery in the key fob would develop scratch marks (see image below), disrupting the flow of current from the battery to the rest of the key fob. Replacing the battery was the solution.

4. The Door Lock Won´t Work In Freezing Temperatures
2014 – 2016 Nissan Rogue had a technical service bulletin in September 2016 because of failing door latches. These door latches wouldn´t close or were difficult to close. This mainly occurred whenever the car had been in freezing temperatures for extended periods of time. The door latch would return to normal once the vehicle was warmed up again.
The service bulletin advised dealers to replace the malfunctioning door lock assembly; it wasn´t necessary to do this with all locks on the car.
Other Potential Door Lock Problems
If you own a model year that´s not one of the above-mentioned ones, then other potential problems can cause the door lock not to open. Below, we´ll look at the most common ones:
Debris And Dirt
If the key gets stuck in the door’s keyhole, or if it won´t go in, there´s most likely a build-up of debris and dirt in the keyhole and/or the door lock assembly. In this case, you´ll need to buy some WD-40 and spray it into the keyhole. Let it sit for 30 seconds, and try to put the key in again.
Broken Connectors
If debris is not what´s causing the issue, then it could be that broken connectors are going to the door lock assembly. The door lock assembly uses cables and attaches these to other parts of the mechanism with metal rods or plastic parts. These metal rods or plastic parts can break or become loose, preventing the door from opening.
To inspect the connectors, you´ll need to open up the door panel of the Rogue and the door you´re having problems with. Then, you´ll need to check for any parts that seem broken or detached, and you´ll need to bind them together. If you don´t know how to do this or what to look for, this is the point to get an automotive specialist involved.
Replacing The Door Lock Assembly
If no broken connectors prevent you from opening the door, the problem is likely with the door lock assembly itself. If this part is damaged or broken, there´s very little else you can do than replace it entirely. For this, follow the instructions in the technical service bulletin document we linked earlier on since this explains how to replace a door lock assembly. Otherwise, a mechanic can do this for you as well.
How To Open Door Lock When Stuck?
If you want to fix the door of your Nissan Rogue, but it´s stuck, then you have to find a way to open it up. Luckily, we found a good video online that shows you how to open the door with a long screwdriver. Check it out!
