What kind of problems does a Range Rover Evoque usually have? This blog has outlined all the most important things you should watch for when you’re in the market for an Evoque. However, let’s first start with a quick answer:
Range Rover Evoque made between 2012 – 2017 have had severe problems with complete engine, turbo, and/or brake failure. Also, they’ve had issues with faulty electronics and non-deployment of airbags. The 2020 model year has had build-quality problems, abrupt engine stalling, and a risk of fires.
However, that doesn’t tell the whole story. In the rest of the article, we’ll discuss every problem in detail. Furthermore, we’ll let you know if recalls for specific problems have been issued or not. When applicable, we’ll also discuss the cost of repair or any other helpful information. Read on!

We Use Real World Vehicle Data To Create This List Of Problems
Before we dive into the most common problems, let’s quickly explain how we created this list.
This data comes from vehicle owners like you. It’s based on real data from real drivers. No guesswork or hypotheticals here.
We use resources like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and many others, to review the most common complaints issues by owners along with the full history of recalls and active investigations.
From there, our team of automotive experts takes a closer look into each problem and breaks down why it happens, what you can do to prevent it, and how to fix it.
We review the data and interpret the results to make your life easier. Now that you understand how we came up with this list, let’s get into it!
Second Generation (L551) Problems
We’re going to start with a list of the problems that affect the second generation of the Evoque. This generation includes all Evoque made from 2019 onwards. However, almost all of the issues below only affect the 2020 model, whereas the other model years seem relatively pain-free.
1. SRS Warning System Falsely Illuminating
One of the first problems we have to consider was a recall for a false warning light illuminating. In this case it was the SRS warning light which is supposed to only light up when there’s a problem with the airbags. However, in these vehicles, it lit up without any particular reason. This would, of course, increase the risk of injury during a crash.
The solution involved updating the restraints control module that’s responsible for the SRS light. Furthermore, this recall affected around 18,000 Evoques made in 2020.
2. Electrical Short-Circuit Increased The Risk Of Fire
At the end of 2020, Land Rover discovered that 3,048 units of the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque MHEV were at risk for a potential engine fire. This problem was caused by a short-circuiting of the 48-volt electrical system, specifically the DCDC converter. The recall was carried out under number 20V683000.
3. Abrupt Engine Stalling
Another serious issue is the complete stalling of certain 2019 – 2020 models. Owners report that the vehicle will stall abruptly without any warning. This happens when standing in front of a traffic light as well as when driving on the highway. When this happens, owners have to restart the vehicle and select a gear before the engine engages again.
A recall was never issued for this; however, many owners have described the same problem on several forums. On these forums, it also becomes clear that Land Rover dealers have had no idea how to fix this problem for a long time.
One owners has eventually stated that updating the transmission software and the power control unit software did seem to fix the problem. Supposedly, the software of these parts weren’t working together correctly, which meant the miscommunicated and stalled the engine.
4. Failing Tire Pressure Software
In specific 2020 models, the tire pressure monitoring software was set incorrectly. Specifically, we’re talking about the non-PHEV models with 18-inch wheels. In these cars, the tire pressure light wouldn’t indicate that the tire pressure had dropped below 25% of the cold inflation pressure stated on the tire placard. The solution involved updating the tire pressure monitoring software to simply do its job.
5. Headliner Can Fail In A Crash
Another 2020 recall involved the adhesive bond of a metal plate on the headliner not being strong enough after being exposed to colder temperatures. This problem escalates quickly in the event of a crash since the headliner can come loose, which means a metal plate flies around the cabin. The recall began on the 17th of January 2020 and involved recalling 3,444 vehicles and applying self-adhesive fleece tape to different sides of the metal headliner.
6. Malfunctioning Windshield Washers
Failure of the windshield washers was another problem for 2,200 Evoque made in 2020. The fuse that controls the front and rear windshield washer could fail which meant the whole system would go down. Therefore, a recall was issued in August 2019, which involved replacing the fuse with one that didn’t fail.
First Generation (L538) Problems
The 2012 – 2019 model years of the Evoque make up the first generation of this car. We learn from the list below that this generation has also had its fair share of problems. We want to clarify here that this generation of the Evoque has had so many problems that we simply couldn’t list them all.
Also, some recalls and some complaints have only affected a smaller number of vehicles, although there are many of such cases which does add up quickly in the end.
7. Complete Brake Failure
One of the most complained about things on the 2012 – 2013 model years of the Evoque was the sudden loss of brake power while driving. Owners reported that, out of nowhere, they would lose brake power. This would happens while driving on a parking lot or when driving on the highway.
Range Rover did issue a recall for 70 vehicles of the 2012 Evoque in which a rear brake caliper was not sufficiently torqued. However, owners of the Evoques that had this problem often times report that the problem was a malfunctioning brake vacuum motor that would need to be replaced.
Luckily, from 2014 onwards, these problems haven’t been reported anymore.
8. Non-Deployment Of Airbags Or Exploding Airbags
Air bags have had a difficult time in the first generation of the Evoque. Especially the 2012 – 2013 and the 2017 model years have had trouble with different aspects of this safety feature. Below, we’ve created a list of all airbag recalls and model years that had this recall.
- 2012 – 2013: Passenger airbag disabled due to a restraint control module software fault. Updating this software fixed the problem—recall number 14V395000.
- 2017: The 2017 model year was recalled for a similar issue. The passenger frontal air bag inflator initiator would fail to inflate in the case of a crash (16V941000). This initiator was replaced.
9. Problems With The Electrical System
Many owners of Evoque that were made between 2012 – 2017 have reported a range of different electrical problems. Some of the symptoms include doors that will not look, exterior lighting that stays on while exiting the vehicle, the eco start/stop-system not working, or random warning lights flashing on the dashboard.
It’s unclear what causes all these problems and an official recall has never been issued. However, it’s very likely that there’s a problem with the software of the body control module, or the car has some faulty wiring. Both of these issues are very difficult to fix without the focused efforts of the manufacturer.
10. Transmission Shifts Into Neutral
Let’s continue with the 2014 – 2015 model. This model also had a recall for an issue with the transmission. The transmission had a risk of shifting into neutral without the driver having any control over this. The transmission sensor clusters had too few crimps in the transmission wiring harness, which allowed the transmission to shift. The recall was carried out under number 16V614000.
12. Complete Engine Failure
One of the most serious issues the 2012 – 2017 model years of the Evoque have had is the complete and premature engine and/or turbo failure. There are numerous complaints on the website of the NHTSA that state owners had to take their cars back to the dealership between the 40,000 – 70,000 miles mark. Here, they were informed that several parts of the engine and/or the complete turbo needed to be replaced.
In some cases, the cost of the quoted repairs exceeded the value of the car which meant the car was scrapped. Again, Range Rover never issued an official recall for this but there have been so many complaints that there’s no reason to believe this wasn’t a widespread issue.
13. Failing Control Arm Fastener
A small number of 2016 – 2017 models of the Evoque had problems with the suspension. Due to an assembly error, the front lower control arm fasteners could fail. This could result in separation of the steering knuckle and hazardous situations. A recall was issued for this problem in January of 2017. The solution involved replacing the parts that connect the front lower control arm to the steering knuckle.
14. Leaking Fuel Rail End Caps
2018 Discovery Evoque models with a 2.0L gasoline engine were recalled in March of 2018 under recall number 18V087000. The problem was the possibility of leaking fuel rail end caps. In some cases, this resulted in fuel dripping into the engine bay, increasing the risk of a fire. The solution involved replacing the fuel rail free of charge.

15. Low Tire Pressure Not Indicated In Convertibles
Our final recall includes a small number (190) of Evoques in which the tire pressure monitoring system did not work. Specifically, we’re talking about the convertible version of the 2018 model year that had 20-inch wheels. Just like the 2020 model year, the 2018 model year also wouldn’t indicate when the tire pressure dropped below 25% of cold inflation pressure. Updating this software fixed the problem.
