What’s The Oil Type, Weight, And Capacity Of A Cadillac Escalade?

We’ve written extensively about the Cadillac Escalade, its capacities, and various features on this blog. Today, we will talk about what oil this SUV needs and what kind of oils are strictly prohibited. Please keep in mind that we’ve gone through the owners’ manuals of all Escalades. Let’s start with a quick answer:

Cadillac Escalades manufactured between 2000 – 2013 use engine oil meeting Dexos1 specifications with a viscosity of SAE 5W-30 with some specific changes in recommendations for colder temperatures. Escalades manufactured from 2014 onwards use oil meeting Dexos1 specifications with a viscosity of SAE 0W-20.

However, that certainly doesn’t tell the whole story. Below we’ll first outline in detail what engine oils should be used for every generation and when temperatures drop so low that you should switch to a different kind of oil. Furthermore, we’ll talk about each generation’s capacity in terms of engine oil, and we’ll discuss how to know when to change the oil and reset the system. Read on!

What’s The Oil Type Used In A Cadillac Escalade?

The first generation of the Cadillac Escalade manufactured between 2000 – 2006 uses engine oil meeting GM Standard GM6094M with a viscosity of SAE 5W-30. However, if temperatures are below 0°F (–18°C), you may also use SAE 10W-30. Click here to buy the recommended engine oil on Amazon.

The second-generation Cadillac Escalade manufactured between 2006 – 2013 uses engine oil meeting Dexos1 specifications and has a viscosity of SAE 5W-30. If temperatures are below −20°F (−29°C), it is recommended that you use SAE 0W‐30 since this will provide a more leisurely cold start for the engine. For the third and fourth generation of the Cadillac Escalade manufacture from 2013 – present day, it’s recommended you use engine oil meeting the Dexos1 specification that has a viscosity of SAE 0W-20. Using another engine oil, even in cooler temperatures, is not recommended. Click here to buy the recommended engine oil on Amazon.

What’s The Oil Capacity Of An Escalade?

Cadillac Escalades manufactured between 2000 – 2013 have an engine oil capacity of 6.0 quarts (5.7 liters). Escalades manufactured from 2014 – Present-day have an engine oil capacity of 8.0 quarts (7.6 liters).

Guidelines For Adding Oil

Before we continue, it’s essential to know that Cadillac issues a few words of warning on two topics.

The first topic is the use of additives for your engine oil. For all generations of the Cadillac Escalade, it’s recommended that you do not add any additives. The oil that meets the Dexos1 specifications already has all the necessary additives mixed into it, and adding additives can result in engine or fuel system damage.

The second topic is engine oil system flushes. It’s recommended that you also do not make use of these. The use of the right engine oil is all that’s needed to let the engine perform in optimum condition.

When To Change Oil Of An Escalade?

All generations of the Cadillac Escalade have a computer system that tells you when to change the engine oil and filter. It does this by combining factors such as engine temperature, engine revolutions, and miles driven. Based on these factors, it calculates when this maintenance needs to be carried out. Based on these driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change should be done can vary considerably.

A ‘Change Engine Oil Soon’ message displays when it’s time to change the engine oil. The engine oil must be changed within 600 miles (1.000 kilometers) of the first appearance of this message. It’s possible that this message does not display for up to a year because of easy driving conditions. Please keep in mind that the engine oil and filter will need to be changed after a year, no matter if the message is displayed or not.

It’s essential to reset the oil life system after every oil change since the system does not do this itself. We’ll explain how to do this below. Furthermore, if the oil life system is ever reset accidentally, it’s essential to change the engine oil at 3.000 miles (5.000 kilometers) after the last oil change.

How To Reset The Oil Level Of An Escalade?

To reset the oil life system of the Escalade, you’ll need to dive into the controls of the vehicle. For this, you have to use the buttons on the steering wheel or the instrument cluster. From there, you have to navigate to ‘GM Oil Life System,’ ‘Oil Life Remaining,’ Or ‘Oil Life’ depending on the generation of Escalade you have.

For the first generation of Cadillac Escalade (manufactured until 2006), resetting then works by turning the key to the RUN position, pressing the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds, and waiting for the ‘Oil Life’ message to blink 10 seconds. Then, turn the key to lock. Now, when you start the car again, the message should be gone. If not, try again since the message did not reset.

For the second, third, and fourth generations of Escalades (the ones manufactured from 2006 onwards), resetting works by holding the SEL or RESET button for five seconds until the CHANGE OIL message disappears completely and resets at 100%.

An alternative method for these generations is as follows: first, display the ‘OIL LIFE’ message on the screen again just as we described a moment ago. From there on, press the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds. The ‘Oil Life’ message will disappear.
