On this blog, we’ve written extensively about the Dodge Charger. Today we’re going to answer multiple questions about the oil of this American SUV. However, let’s start with a quick answer:
For the 2009 – 2020 Dodge Journey with a 2.4L engine or the 2011 – 2014 Journey with a 3.6L engine, the following API-certified engine oils are recommended: Pennzoil SAE 5W-20 (Platinum), Shell Helix SAE 5W-20, or Mopar SAE 5W-20. The next engine oils are recommended for the 2008 – 2011 Journey with a 3.5L engine: Pennzoil SAE 10W-30 or Valvoline High Mileage 10W-30.
However, that doesn’t tell the whole story. Below we dive deeper into the oil weight and capacity of the Dodge Journey. Furthermore, we also show you where to find suitable oils. We also discuss how often the oil of a Journey should be changed and how to reset the system of the Journey after this oil change.
What’s The Oil Weight Of A Dodge Journey?
Oil weight or oil viscosity refers to how smoothly engine oils flow through the system at a specific temperature. For the 2009 – 2020 Journey with a 2.4L engine, an oil weight of 5W-20 is recommended. The same can be said for the 3.6L engine in the 2011 – 2014 Journey. The 2008 – 2011 Journey needs 10W-30 for the engine to operate optimally.
Furthermore, it’s good to know that Dodge, like most other car manufacturers, only recommends engine oils that are API- and SAE-approved. These stamps indicate that the engine oil meets certain specifications. However, it must be said that engine oils that don’t carry these markings usually are excellent to use, especially if you buy them from renowned brands such as Mopar, Shell, Valvoline, Mobile, and many more.
If you’re interested in buying new engine oil, it’s good to know you can buy these on Amazon. Below we’ve outlined the different engines and their respective recommended engine oils:

What’s The Oil Capacity Of A Dodge Journey?
Dodge Journey’s manufactured between 2009 – 2020 with a 2.4L engine has an oil capacity of 4.5 quarts (4.26 liters) with the engine oil filter. The 2008 – 2011 Journey with a 3.5L engine has an oil capacity of 5.5 quarts (5.2liters), and the 2011 – 2014 Journey with a 3.6L engine has an oil capacity of 6 quarts (5.6 liters) with an oil filter.

When To Change The Oil Of A Dodge Journey?
We know that Dodge Journeys last between 180,000 – 220,000 miles. However, Journeys should also be maintained properly to reach this mileage. Luckily, they have clear instructions when it comes to how often the engine oil should be changed. These are as follows:
The 2008 – 2011 Dodge Journey engine oil should be changed within 6.000 miles (10.000 kilometers) or every six months. For the 2011 – 2020 Journey, the interval between oil changes should never exceed 10.000 miles (16.000 kilometers), twelve months, or 350 hours of run time, whichever comes first. The oil of a Journey should be changed every 4.000 miles (6.500 kilometers) if the car is mainly operated in dusty or offroad conditions.
How To Check Oil Level Dodge Journey?
Dodge Journeys manufactured from 2011 onwards are equipped with a system that keeps track of the oil change intervals. The system doesn’t measure the oil level. Instead, it keeps track of how long it has been between oil changes to ensure you don’t exceed the safety recommendations.
Checking the engine oil level is, therefore, still something that needs to be done manually. Below you can read what Dodge has to say about measuring the oil level in a Journey.
Take the dipstick out of the oil reservoir. It’s best to do this 5 minutes after you’ve turned the engine of. Measuring oil levels of a cold engine will give incorrect readings. The range markings on the dipstick consist of a crosshatch zone marked SAFE or a crosshatch zone marked with MIN at the low end of the range and MAX at the high end of the range. Adding 1 Quart (1 Liter) of oil when the reading is at the low end of the range marking will raise the oil level to the high end of the range marking
