Curb Weight Per Model Year And Trim Of The Mazda RX-8

Normally a car that has been in production for eight years has a lot of different trim levels. With that then come many different curb and gross vehicle weights. However, this is not the case for the Mazda RX-8.

Yes, the Mazda RX-8 did have several different trim levels throughout its production span. These are the 6-Speed Manual, Sport (Automatic), Touring, Grand Touring, the R3, the one-time edition of the Shinka Special Edition, and the 40th Anniversary Edition.

However, what’s interesting about the Mazda RX-8 is that there were very few differences in weight among these different models. You can see the curb weight of the specific trim level you are looking for in the table below. Furthermore, we’ve also added the gross vehicle weight, which is the maximum weight the car can carry, including passengers, baggage, and a small trailer.

What Is The Weight Of A Mazda RX-8 Wankel Rotary Engine?

One of the most notable features of the Mazda RX-8 is, of course, its wankel rotary engine. The Mazda RX-8 makes use of an unmodified 13B-MSP Renesis Engine.

Including all standard attachments (excluding the airbox, alternator, starter motor, and cover) and without engine fluids such as the coolant and oil, this engine weighs 247 pounds or 112 kilograms.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that a fully dressed 13B-MSP Renesis Engine (including flywheel, clutch, exhaust manifold, and alternator weighs 297 pounds or 134.7 kilograms.

How Much Does The Mazda RX-8 Weigh Compared To It’s Competitors?

Finally, we feel it’s important to compare the weight of the RX-8 to its main competitors to get a feel for how heavy it is truly. The RX-8 was last produced in 2012, and therefore we took 2012 competitors.

What we found is that the RX-8 is actually quite light compared to its competitors. Only the GTI’s minimum curb weight is a little lighter (30 pounds). On the maximum side, we see that the RX-8 is the lightest car by far and that the 370Z is the heavyweight here (although, of course, more powerful).
