What Is The Oil Type Used In Chevy Impala?

  • Chevy Impala has spawned across five generations, with each generation possessing several models. In the table given below, we have enlisted all of the major prerequisites that you’ll need to tick mark before buying the right oil type for your car.
  • The first generation of Chevy Impala (1966-70) uses SAE 10W-30 synthetic motor oil. You could also use a 10W-40 synthetic blend if you live in warmer climates. Chevron Delo Conventional Motor Oil 10W-30 1 Gallon is recommended.
  • The second and third generations of Chevy Impala (1999-2003) & (2003-05) used the same engine oils. The optimum kind of engine oil for these generations are those that are API certified and have the starburst symbol. The best weight for this generations’ model is the SAE 5W-30. However, if you live in colder climates, you could also use the 0W-30 engine oil. ACDelco Dexos1 is a recommended oil. To check out some engine oils that go with this generation, click here.
  • The fourth-generation (2005-12) works best with those engine oils that fulfill dexos1TM specifications and has SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade (engine oils with 0W-20 viscosity grade can also be used if you live in a cold climate where the temperature falls below -29°C). ACDelco dexos1 Synthetic Blend is recommended.
  • The latest generation of Chevy Impala (2013-Present) uses engine oils that meet the dexos1 specification. Such Engine oils are marked with the dexos1 approved logo. To see which engine oils fall in this category, see this website. ACDelco dexos1 full synthetic is generally recommended.

When To Change The Oil of A Chevy Impala?

Chevy Impala comes with an engine system that can indicate when to change the engine oil and filter. When the engine system calculates that the oil life has been diminished, it will show a CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message. Upon seeing this message, you must change the oil soon, preferably within the next 1000 km.

Some vehicles do not show the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message but instead show an OIL LIFE REMAINING percentage. When that percentage is low, it is suggested that you get your oil changed. If the engine oil life system is reset accidentally, the engine oil must be changed 5000 km after the last oil change.

How To Check The Oil Level of A Chevy Impala?

It is a good practice to check your car’s engine oil regularly, approximately once every 650 km. You can check the oil level of your Chevy Impala using the dipstick. Follow the given steps to check the oil level of your Chevy Impala.

  • Turn off your engine. It is best to check the engine level after the car has been off for 2 hours. If you have to check the oil level urgently, wait at least 15 minutes after turning off your car before you check the engine oil.
  • Take out the dipstick and clean it using a paper towel. Push the cleaned dipstick back in all the way.
  • Take the dipstick out again and check the oil level.
  • If oil is below the cross-hatched area at the tip of the dipstick, add 1 liter or 1 quart of the recommended oil.
  • Be sure to add the oil to keep it somewhere in the optimum range in the cross-hatched area.
  • Put the dipstick all the way back in once you are done.

How To Reset The Engine Oil Life System In Chevrolet Impala?

Resetting the engine oil life system is essential to ensure that it can accurately calculate when the next oil change is needed. There are two methods through which you can do this in Chevrolet Impala:

The first method involves the use of controls on the steering wheel.

  1. Using the DIC controls on the right side of the steering wheel, display REMAINING OIL LIFE on the DIC.
  2. When the remaining oil life is low, the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message will appear on the display.
  3. Press V on the DIC controls and hold down for a few seconds to clear the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message and reset the oil life at 100%. Be careful not to reset the oil life display accidentally at any time other than after the oil is changed. It cannot be reset accurately until the next oil change.

The oil life system can also be reset as follows:

  1. Display REMAINING OIL LIFE on the DIC.
  2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds.
  3. The system is reset when the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message is off and the REMAINING OIL LIFE message is displayed.
  4. If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message comes back on when the vehicle is started, the engine oil life system has not been reset. Repeat the procedure.
