You should check the engine oil level at each fuel fill. The following is a step-by-step procedure to check the engine oil level in a Chevrolet Cobalt.

  • Turn off the engine until all the oil has drained back into the pan. This should be done within 15-20 minutes.
  • Pull out the dipstick, clean it with a towel, and put it back in.
  • The oil level will be shown on the striped part of the dipstick.
  • Upon checking engine oil level with a dipstick, if you see that the oil is below the minimum mark, add 1 quart of the recommended oil.

When To Add Engine Oil In A Chevrolet Cobalt?

All models of Chevy Cobalt come with a computer system that will let you know when to change the engine oil and filter. This is based on several factors, such as engine revolutions and average engine temperature. When the system finds out that the oil life has been diminished to such an extent that further use will lead to engine damage, you will see a Change Engine Oil Soon message. It is best to change the oil within the next 1000 km.

If you drive your car under the best conditions, the chances are that this message won’t pop up for over a year. However, it is best to change your car oil at least once a year. Another thing to do while changing your car oil is to reset the system once your oil change is finished. This will allow your car to work optimally.

How to Reset the Engine Oil Life System?

The Engine Oil Life System is made to calculate when to change your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. You should reset the system to calculate when the following oil change is required whenever the oil is changed. If the oil is changed before a CHANGE OIL SOON message is turned on, reset the system.

After changing the engine oil, the system must be reset to accurately calculate when is the time for another oil change. Follow this sequence of steps to reset the oil system.

  1. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN, with the engine off.
  2. Press the information and reset buttons on the Driver Information Center (DIC) at the same time to enter the personalization menu.
  3. Press the information button to scroll through the available personalization menu modes until the DIC display shows OIL-LIFE RESET.
  4. Press and hold the reset button until the DIC display shows ACKNOWLEDGED. This will tell you the system has been reset.
  5. Turn the key to LOCK/OFF. If the CHANGE OIL SOON message comes back on when the vehicle is started, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the reset procedure.
