How Well Does A Toyota Corolla Drive In The Snow? (Answered)

Toyota Corolla is known as one of the most reliable cars globally. It is equally popular with people living in areas with zero snowfall and the area that has snowfall. The 2022 Corolla is equipped with a Front Wheel Drive system that works best in civic conditions in driver-friendly weather. But with the use of winter tires can prove to be a wise purchase decision for the buyers.

Engine weight on the front axle increases front tire grip. Winter tires make it an even better Snow-weather commuter. Drivers mostly share positive feedback about Corolla with respect to its snow-drivability. One main element of a car that makes it winter-friendly is a FWD system which the 2022 Corolla has.

Because the engine weight is evenly spread along the front axle, the car needs less driver input to make the drive trouble-free in winter conditions. The front tires get better traction owing to engine weight, thus keeping the tire grip on the higher side. This allows for better driving in snow.

On top of FWD, an added feature is TCS (Traction Control System), which ensures maximum traction to all wheels. We are happy to report that Corolla 2022 comes standard with TCS across all variants. Moving forward, the VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) further improves handling and maneuvering in winter conditions.

With the available wheel sizes ranging from 15 inches all the way to 18 inches, the drivers can easily increase traction by increasing the wheel size as it is directly proportional to the area of the tire gripping the road surface.

Experience Of Toyota Corolla Owners

While all of the above factors are a statement of 2022 Corolla’s winter-worthiness, nothing can meet the authenticity of a driver’s verdict who has actually driven one in winters. In one of the videos from YouTube, the driver had his vehicle on all-season tires, and this is what he had to say about the Corolla’s snow behavior:

“Alright, as the snow is not as thick or as icy, the corolla came out perfectly fine.” He further goes on and says, “So far no issues. Again it’s not that much snow.” The same driver while going up on an unplowed snowy hill states, “It’s not that bad, the car is still going.”

“They are great in the snow. Like 90% of FWD vehicles, though, they are only as good as the tires you put on them.

And NEVER put sandbags in the trunk of a FWD vehicle, unless you enjoy fishtailing. Sandbags are for RWD vehicles only.”

The Corolla was my second choice and I drove the LE. The exterior for the 2009 is nice, but a picture of the interior should be in the dictionary next to the word “generic”. However, it handled the same turns in the same conditions smoothly. On several turns I could see the traction control light going crazy, but all I noticed when driving was a easy turn in the snow with no noticeable slippage. In truth, if it wasn’t for the light, I might not have noticed that the traction control had engaged.

Ultimately, I had to choose the Corolla. It handled the snow with confidence and I felt much safer driving it. If I lived in a climate with less snow, I probably would have picked the Mazda3. I decided to purchase the Corolla S because the interior is far better than the LE (though it still pales in comparison to the Mazda3)

With some feedback from drivers, it is fair to say that the 2022 Toyota Corolla is a worry-free daily commuter regardless of the weather one is driving in. This further cements Toyota Corolla’s credibility as a global contender since it can take up any weather condition.

Does Toyota Corolla Have Snow Tires?

The 2022 Toyota Corolla comes standard with all-season tires. Only the XSE (Apex Edition) has all-season tires as an additional option. Drivers in most areas can easily fulfill their driving needs with the use of All-season tires. But as with any other car, there are various types of tires available for the 2022 Corolla that can fit in and work more optimally in snow and winters.

The standard all-season tires are great till the temperatures dive below 45 degrees. This is where the rubber compound meets its limit and hardens, thereby reducing tire grip. Winter tires are structurally different in how the rubber compound used in their manufacturing is different from all-season tires.

The rubber compound in winter tires is more resilient to extreme winter temperatures and can maintain a sticky grip in temperatures way below 45 degrees. This is what every driver needs when it comes to winter and snow driving. More traction to make the drive of the vehicle grippy and trouble-free.

Winter tires can maintain grip in much colder conditions, and the vehicle remains more stable than all-season tires. A good idea is to keep the winter tires on the vehicle from October till March. Generally, the first and last quarter of the year is the coldest in North America. Therefore, it is a good practice to keep the winter tires on during these times.

If you want to buy snow tires, we advise you to use Tirerack. They have a great tool that allows you to find the perfect fit for your exact model, so you won’t have to worry about fitment issues. Furthermore, they also offer free shipping on most of their orders. Check out their store here!

What Drive System Does A Toyota Corolla Have?

The 2022 Toyota Corolla comes equipped with a Front Wheel Drive system all across the board. Be it the most affordable variant or the one with all bells and whistles, the 2022 Corolla is driven by a Front Wheel Drive system. There are several benefits to using this particular drive system.

Other manufacturers try to mimic the practices that go into the manufacturing of the Corolla. Since its inception, Corolla has been a market catalyst for the compact car segment and has delivered on logically incorporated production techniques. The Front Wheel Drive for a Front Engine car is a match made in heaven that offers a competitively priced vehicle in this segment.

A key feature of a Front Wheel Drive system is weight saving. In order to keep the car’s weight in check, a Front Wheel Drive system is the optimal route to take. It further helps in reducing the production cost of the vehicle. Then comes the added benefit of better fuel economy.

As we know that the fuel economy is inversely proportional to the vehicle’s weight. The lower the weight is, the better will be the fuel economy. A neat trick to keep your car away from the infamous title of being a “Gas Guzzler”. For more about this topic check this blog: Types Of Fuel A Toyota Corolla Uses (All Generations)

This type of drive system offers a better grip to the front tires because the weight of the engine and transmission is directly transitioned to the front tires enhancing the overall grip of the tires that drive the vehicle forward. In contrast to the RWD systems, a FWD system also offers better stability as it takes advantage of the pull-motion rather than the push-motion.

Given all of these features, a Front Wheel Drive system is the best and the most logical choice for a car in this segment. It offers a better grip, better fuel economy, lowered production cost. On top of all of this, it delivers a better driving experience for an average driver than an RWD or AWD system.

What Electronics System Helps The Toyota Corolla In The Snow?

Since the Corolla is designed for mass appeal, various systems assist drivers in less than ideal driving conditions. Winter driving is not a piece of cake for every driver and hence requires the use of technology on top of mechanical prowess to further improve the drive quality of the car in extreme weather.

Traction Control System (TRAC)

Toyota Corolla 2022 has a Traction Control System (TRAC), which helps maintain traction at the tire’s end that requires most of it. This feature assists with ensuring maximum grip at maximum times at all wheels. This is a technology that isn’t new by any means. Still, Toyota has perfected it for the Corolla, and the resultant is amazing grip at the times of cornering, lane changing, and entry/exit from a corner.

Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD)

In addition to TRAC, Toyota also offers Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD). This super awesome technology optimizes break-force and distributes it to the wheel that requires the most of it. This unique technology offers a great braking experience that allows the driver to keep the car stable in a braking situation.

EBD redirects the brake force from the wheel that requires it the least to the one that requires it the most. This keeps the vehicle stable by reducing wheel-spin in corners, braking while changing lanes, and winters or times of snow. Needless to say, it is a must for today’s compact cars.

Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)

Then there is Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) which keeps the car planted onto the road surface by maintaining its center of gravity. This robust system ensures the vehicle remains stable and minimizes the body roll, resulting in inertia. This helps keep the weight of the car pointed towards its center of gravity and enhances the overall grip of the car.

So in case of a high-speed sudden lane change, the vehicle will stay stable and keep its grip while pushing itself into the road surface. This is done with the blend of all of the aforementioned technologies and mechanical expertise that goes into manufacturing the Corolla 2022.

In a nutshell, the 2022 Corolla has what we can call the personality for everyday use in any type of condition. Most buyers don’t even want to switch to any other car simply because the Corolla 2022 has so much to offer, especially for the people who drive in winters quite a bit.

Ground Clearance

Usually, when it comes to people who frequently drive in snow and winters, the best bet is to go for an SUV. Did you see something there? Yes. It is the ground clearance that makes an SUV a better winter/snow vehicle. With higher ground clearance, the added benefit of larger wheels also comes into play.

For wheels with a bigger diameter, the tires can offer a bigger patch to grip the road. This results in better road grip since a larger patch of the tires is touching the road surface. There is a reason why modern cars are graduating towards bigger wheel diameters. The enhanced grip is certainly a convincing factor, necessitating the use of larger wheels.

This is one of the reasons why SUVs are becoming more and more popular. With Compact Sedans, we can not ask for the ground clearance of an SUV for sure. What can be done instead is to keep the ground clearance at a maximum possible limit. With Toyota Corolla 2022, the ground clearance across all variants is set at 5.3 Inches.

Usually, the SUVs have Ground Clearances from 6-8 inches these days, but this cannot be exercised in the production of Compact Sedans. Many of the competitors of Toyota Corolla 2022, like the Mazda 3, Hyundai Elantra, also keep their ground clearance numbers between 5.2-5.6, which makes it the ideal range for compact sedans.

Toyota Corolla 2022 has a wheelbase of 106.3, about an inch shorter than the two main rivals Mazda 3 and Hyundai Elantra. The Honda Civic comes in at 107.7, making it almost one and half-inch longer than the Corolla. Although a longer wheelbase is good in a hill climb situation, we are not really talking about SUVs here.

The Corolla, because of the shorter wheelbase, offers a tighter turning radius. This can help in winter and snow as well since the car is more tightly put together and has a better center of gravity. Although the difference might not appear numerically significant, it still offers a noticeable difference in the vehicle’s driving dynamics.

Another way to look at it would be to imagine a foot scale and a 6-inch scale with equal width. If we level these up on 4-small wheels, which one do you think will be more stable. Yes, exactly. The shorter wheelbase gives the advantage here to Toyota Corolla 2022, which will offer a minor but noticeable difference in the car’s driving characteristics in winter and snow.

What Traction Device You Can Use On The Toyota Corolla?

There is a range of drivers with different preferences regarding how they want their cars to drive and behave in less than ideal conditions. The one thing that stays standard across the board is to have maximum traction when driving in winters and snow conditions. There are various devices to choose from to increase traction in winters and snow.

One such product is a traction chain. A recommended product is the “Peerless Auto-Trac Tire Traction Chain.” You can find these here on Amazon.

The driver can enhance the traction and grip with traction devices, leaving less room for a bad experience while driving in snow or winters.

Happy driving.
