Buick Encore: Oil Type, Capacity & Weight (Explained)

On this blog, we have written extensively about Buicks, their capabilities, and maintenance. Today we discuss the oil of the Asian-made Buick Encore and Encore GX. Let’s start with a quick answer:

For the Buick Encore and Encore GX, universally recommended oils for the 1.4 LE2 turbo and 1.3 L3 include ACDelco Full Synthetic 0W20 or Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0W20. All Buick Encore have an oil capacity of 4.2 quarts (4 liters) with the oil filter. Buick used two different engines for the Encore, namely the LE2 and LUV; they have the same oil capacity of 4.2 quarts. For the Buick Encore GX, two engines were used, namely the 1.2 and 1.3 L3. The 1.2 L3 has an oil capacity of 6.7 quarts (6.3 liters) with the oil filter, and the 1.3 L3 has an oil capacity of 7.8 quarts (7.4 liters) with the oil filter.

When To Change The Oil Of A Buick Encore?

The Buick Encore is equipped with an ‘engine oil life’ system which indicates when the Encore needs an oil change. When the engine oil falls below a certain threshold, the following message will display on the dashboard: CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON. When this message displays, it’s important to change the oil of the Buick Encore within the next 600 miles (1.000 kilometers).

When driving under good conditions, it may be possible that this message will not display for up to a year. Please note that the oil of the Buick Encore should be changed every year even when this message is not displayed. If this happens, please don’t forget to reset the engine oil life system (instructions on how to do this can be found below).

How To Check Oil Level On The Buick Encore?

The engine oil of the Buick Encore should be checked regularly. Buick advises you to do this every 400 miles (or 650 kilometers). To check the engine oil level of the Buick Encore, you first need to locate the dipstick. In the image below, number 2 shows you the location of the dipstick in the engine bay.

Before checking the engine oil level, please make sure that the engine has been off for at least 15 minutes. Warm engine oil expands and will give you a false reading. Take the dipstick out off the oil reservoir and wipe it clean with a paper towel or cloth. Then, put the dipstick back in the oil reservoir and pull it out again.

If the oil level falls below the cross-hatched area at the bottom of the dipstick (see image below), you must refill the oil reservoir with 1 quart of oil and repeat the measurement. Please make sure never to add more oil than the reservoir’s maximum capacity (as stated in an earlier subheading). Overflowing the oil of the engine may cause serious damage to the engine and its components.
