Buick Enclave: Oil Type, Capacity & Weight (Explained)

On this blog, we have written extensively about Buicks, their capabilities, and maintenance. Today we discuss the oil of the American-made Buick Enclave. Let’s start with a quick answer:

For all Buick Enclaves manufactured between 2008 – Present Day with a 3.6L engine recommended Dexos1 engine oils include, but are not limited to, BP Visco 5000 DX, Mobil Super 3000 Formula D1 5W-30, Shell PC 2046, and Total D1 5W-30.

However, that doesn’t answer the question fully. Each generation has its own specific needs and limitations. Furthermore, you also need to know the weight of the oil, the capacity, how to check the engine oil level, and how to refill it. We’ll discuss all of this in this blog, so read on!

Why Do All Enclaves Use The Same Engine Oils?

As seen above, all Buick Enclaves use the same engine oil, which is Dexos1 approved 5W-30. The reason for this is that Buick hasn’t changed the engine of the Enclave a lot in the USA. All Enclaves that are sold in the State make use of a 3.6L gasoline engine. When going through the owners’ manual of these different generations, it became clear that they0 also use the same engine oil.

What’s The Oil Weight Of A Buick Enclave?

All Buick Enclaves make use of Dexos1 approved 5W-30 engine oil. If you’re interested in a list of these engine oils, please visit gmdexos.com. In climates where the temperature drops below −20°F, oil with a viscosity rating of 0W-30 may also be used and is actually recommended by Buick because it makes sure the engine starts more easily.

What’s The Oil Capacity Of A Buick Enclave?

Buick Enclaves manufactured between 2007 – 2012 have an engine oil capacity of 5.5 quarts (5.2 liters) with the oil filter. Enclaves manufactured from 2013 onwards have an engine oil capacity of 6.0 quarts (5.5 liters) with the oil filter.

When To Change The Oil Of A Buick Enclave?

The Buick Enclave is equipped with an ‘engine oil life’ system which indicates when the Enclave needs an oil change. When the engine oil falls below a certain threshold, the following message will display on the dashboard: CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON. When this message displays, it’s important to change the oil of the Buick Enclave within the next 600 miles (1.000 kilometers).

When driving under good conditions, it may be possible that this message will not display for up to a year. Please note that the oil of the Buick Enclave should be changed every year, even when this message is not displayed. If this happens, please don’t forget to reset the engine oil life system (instructions on how to do this can be found below).

How To Check Oil Level On The Buick Enclave?

The engine oil of the Buick Encore should be checked regularly. Buick advises you to do this every 400 miles (or 650 kilometers). To check the engine oil level of the Buick Encore, you first need to locate the dipstick.

Before checking the engine oil level, please make sure that the engine has been off for at least 15 minutes. Warm engine oil expands and will give you a false reading. Take the dipstick out off the oil reservoir and wipe it clean with a paper towel or cloth. Then, put the dipstick back in the oil reservoir and pull it out again.

If the oil level falls below the cross-hatched area at the bottom of the dipstick (see image above), you must refill the oil reservoir with 1 quart of oil and repeat the measurement. Please make sure never to add more oil than the reservoir’s maximum capacity (as stated in an earlier subheading). Overflowing the oil of the engine may cause serious damage to the engine and its components.
